Construction Zone: Part 5

It has been a while since we visited the construction zone, and a lot has changed!

Quick recap: Our favorite biking trail has been closed for nearly two years because they are building a giant bridge above it that will eventually connect with a highway.
It is still possible to bike along the trail, if you’re willing to go through some mud and lift your bike over the huge drainage pipes. Makes for an interesting ride!
The biggest change was on the other end of the new road. This area is quite shocking to see still, because it used to be completely wooded and level with the train tracks.

Click here to see what it looked like before; it’s the second picture!
We assumed that they were going to tunnel under the railroad, but now it looks like they are going to build a new railroad bridge! That will be interesting to see in progress.

And here is where the big diverging diamond interchange will go. This area was once covered in trees as well. It will be quite something when it is all finished!
I wonder what those are?

There has been a lot of changes made to the city I live in over the past few years, and it’s so easy to forget what it looked like beforehand. I wanted to make a point to take pictures of areas before they change, so I can always remember the way things used to be.

Weekly Journal #23

Last week was a blast! I loved only working two days and I wish I only had to work two days a week every week. But sadly, I need more dollars than that.

My little buddy has still been hanging around, and helped me get the garden ready for winter the other day! We’ve been calling her Maude.

I stocked up on all kinds of Christmas food while shopping this week!

We had a great Thanksgiving and ate way too much, of course.

On the day after thanksgiving we always go with my mom and pick out her tree. It’s so much fun!
Then we pile on 100s of pretty vintage ornaments while drinking eggnog and watching Christmas movies,

Cat Photos Friday #87- Christmas Wishlist

With Christmas right around the corner, it’s time to start dreaming of what presents you might get.. And the cats are dreaming big!

They would love a nice new cat condo! This one made from a real tree is so neat, and much better than that ratty one they have now.

Or maybe this fancy one, complete with an exercise wheel!  Jeeves would love that so much.

Cloud prefers this Pink Martini cat condo. It’s just her style don’t you think?

I think this nice modern one is more my style
I think they would also have a lot of fun hanging from the ceiling !
This luxury bed is perfect for staying cozy on those cold winter nights.. Plus it comes with drawers to store their toys in.

Which one would you choose? I would love to be able to get the one with the exercise wheel, I bet my guys would really use it. But that little bed is hilarious!

Christmas Sights

Now that Thanksgiving is here, the rest of the world finally seems to join me in my Christmas excitement, which for me, started the day after Halloween! I thought I would share some of my favorite photos of Christmas at my mom’s house over the last few years.

I am a complete Christmas fool, I love this time of year. Everything about it.  When it finally comes around I can hardly contain my excitement, and I always find myself in disbelief that Christmastime has really come around again. I try to sit back and enjoy every second of it

I love how colorful rainbow Christmas lights illuminate houses against the black winter sky.
The tree is such a glorious sight. It’s hard to look at anything else in the room when it stands aglow with 1000s of tiny lights and sparkling ornaments.

Strands of lights draped across windows give such a warm and cozy feeling, during the frigid nights.

My favorite decorations are the vintage ones. I feel like Christmas was meant to be 50s and 60s themed.

I love cozying up on the couch with a warm mug of hot cocoa or eggnog, and watching Christmas movies.

It’s definitely a magical time of year!

What are your favorite parts about this Holiday season?

What I Wore- Layering Skills

If I look thicker than normal, it’s because I was wearing a lot of clothes.

On this day we were going to a bonfire and it was supposed to get very cold that night. I wanted to be warm, but I didn’t want to wear the usual jeans and a sweater I always end up wearing every single day of the winter, so I got creative! I am wearing two pairs of thick, knitted tights with leggings over top. And because the sleeves of this dress are open and flow-y, I was able to stuff a long sleeved shirt and my warmest bulky sweater underneath, then I squeezed it all together with this cardigan. I also wore a scarf and I ended up being quite warm the entire evening, even hot at one point! I am pretty excited about my new layering skills.

How do you dress to keep warm in the winter?

Weekly Journal #22

The cats got fleas!! Which is ridiculous because 1) none of them have been outside in months, 2) it’s been really cold lately, why are fleas still living?!!

So I put flea medicine on all the cats, (Cloud thought I was trying to kill her!) washed every single piece of fabric in the house, and sprayed all the carpets. Whew, hopefully we avoided an infestation.
The most exciting thing to happen, was this little visitor! She was wandering around and seemed hungry so I gave her some food and played with her for a bit. She came back around the same time yesterday so I am wondering if I will see her again today. I am beginning to think she doesn’t have a home, so who knows what I just got myself into…. -_-  Jeeves in is love with her and tried to chew through the glass door to get to her!
We had been craving Five Guys veggie sandwiches for a while now, they’re just so darn good! The fries too!
We took a trip to the mall where I learned that Cloud was a mascot! I seriously need to own something with that logo on it.. Steven joked that I should ask to have that poster when they are done displaying it so we can hang it in the cat’s bedroom. I told him not to tempt me..

I am looking forward to this week. It’s Thanksgiving week and I only have to work on Monday and Tuesday, which is so much better than last year when I had to work the entire week, even on Thanksgiving!

Cat Photos Friday #86- Beneath the Tree

It’s the cat’s favorite time of year!

When that sparkly fun, toy -holder appears in the living room, and provides hours of cat entertainment every single day.
The cats put on their best Christmas sweaters for the occasion.

The boys didn’t mind wearing their sweaters, but Cloud hated hers. I think she just didn’t feel cute in a bulky turtle neck sweater. (But who does??)
Chester played Santa and sat on the roof of their gingerbread house.
His favorite pastime is chewing the plastic tree -_-

The only way Cloud would sit in front of the tree in her sweater is if I put a stack of books down!

Don’t be a Grinch this season!

Fair Food

I almost forgot about all the food photos I took during our trip to the fair back in October!

The main attraction at the fair, besides the rides, is definitely all the crazy food.

There are rows and rows of food stands, with their bright, colorful signs advertising all kinds of deep fried craziness. It’s hard to know where to look! And even harder to choose what to get!

My favorite are the stalls selling candy apples and cotton candy. They’re just so cute!

So what did we choose to eat??

The first food of the day was pierogies for me, and chicken on a stick for Steven. I had these pierogies last year and had been thinking about them ever since, they’re so good!

Next up was a slice of spinach pizza for me, and a famous fair corn dog for Steven. I’m not sure what made me choose pizza out of all things, but I think it was the spinach that was calling me. A little bit of healthiness during an unhealthy day.

And then… There were these… Magnificent doughnuts!!!

They were the best doughnuts we ever tasted. They also had amazing pretzels. We got really lucky because as we stood in line for the second time when we came back at night, they were giving away the broken ones. We didn’t turn down that opportunity and proceeded to stuff ourselves with soft, sugary warm doughnut. x_x
What is your favorite fair food?

To The Falls!

When planning our little day trip up to the the Blue Ridge Parkway, I wanted to make sure
we went on a good hike; one we hadn’t been on before and preferably involving a waterfall.

A quick google search told me there was a nice little walk to some falls right in the town of Little Switzerland, which was our first stop on our Blue Ridge adventure. The falls were on somebody’s property, but they didn’t mind visitors, and since it wasn’t a tourist attraction, there wasn’t anybody else on the trail!

A little while down the path and we reached the falls! It wasn’t quite what we expected, we thought the path would lead to the falls, not past it. We could have probably climbed down to get to them, but after the two weeks of rain that has just bombarded us, it looked a bit too muddy.

So we decided to continue on down the path and see what else we could discover.

There was a nice break in the rain, and the sun shined through the tree canopies, turning everything a bright, lush, golden green.

It was especially pretty since the trees were just beginning to change color.

We walked and walked until we discovered an abandoned plot of land where a house once stood. After that we walked and walked some more, and then realized we were going to have a long and hard walk back if we didn’t turn around soon.

On our way back we stopped to admire the pretty stream and I spotted what I thought was a little plastic toy, but on closer inspection…

It was a cute little red newt!

He was very friendly and didn’t mind hanging out.

I just wanted to put him in my pocket and take him home.

We had so much fun on our hike!  I definitely want to go back and do it again some day.

Weekly Journal #21

Last week started out with a trip to the doctor for my yearly checkup. Everything went great until  it was time for my blood draw. I have a strange phobia of anything to do with veins and last time my blood got drawn I almost passed out. This time was no exception, and I came even closer to passing out than before 🙁 I had to sit down for almost 20 minutes waiting for it to pass, and then when I got up to check out I nearly passed out again! My vision started getting fuzzy, but I just wanted to get out of there so I powered through and by the time I was done scheduling my next appointment I could barely see! But once I got out into the cold air I felt better.  What an annoying irrational fear.

My arm hurt really bad where I got stabbed, and then my other arm was sore from a vaccine. I got a chocolate cheesecake milkshake afterward to help myself cope with the trauma.
Later in the week we checked out our local used bookstore, and hit the science book jackpot! Richard Dawkins is my favorite and I am hoping to complete my collection of his books. Also I hadn’t read anything by Bill Nye before so I am excited to get started on that. I need to start setting aside more time to read!
And then on Saturday it was time to put up the Christmas tree! The cats donned their brand new Christmas sweaters and really got in the spirit! (Yeah, right!)
