NYC: On the Street

dsc_0213

A collection of random shots I took while wandering the streets of New York City. Most of the pictures I didn’t frame of even stop to think about. I just snapped away as I walked.

One of the many glorious city pigeons I saw!

My favorite thing about our visit was just roaming the streets and taking in all the sights. I love the crazy atmosphere of the city, where there’s always something new and exciting to see every street corner you turn down. Although I am not a very social person, I feel safe and secure in large crowds. I like how busy everybody is in NYC; nobody tries to talk to you and everyone seems to mind their own business. Because of that, it seemed a lot less stressful and scary than my own city. I miss New York.

Snow Day

dsc_0012

They had been predicting  it for over a week, and it actually happened. A big snow storm!

dsc_0003

I love snow so much, but since I live in North Carolina, I don’t really get too see it as often as I would like. Luckily it does snow here a few times each winter. Sometimes we only see a few inches, other times we get nearly a foot, which was the case here!

dsc_0008dsc_0014dsc_0022dsc_0027dsc_0031dsc_0032dsc_0035dsc_0038dsc_0042dsc_0045

All these photos were taken in my Mom’s yard. I love how magical and different the snow makes everything look. I love wandering along usual streets, that seem to look unfamiliar in the snow. I wish I lived in a colder climate. I was born in Detroit Michigan, so I feel like I am meant to be living in the north. But I least I am not so far deep in the south that I never see snow, that would be a sad life for me.

New York City

dsc_0428

I’d never spent much time thinking about New York City. But a few years ago I got the idea that I wanted to visit during Christmas time. And as the years went by, my desire to visit this city grew and grew until the next thing I knew, I was buying plane tickets this past November, to visit the city just a few weeks later.

20161208_105612

The last time I had flown on a plane, I was four years old. All I remember is eating fig newtons and being in a cloud the whole time. For years I had convinced myself that I was afraid of flying, and vowed to never set foot on a plane. But eventually I realized that was silly because I love traveling and there are so many places I want to go. It’s been years since got over my fear, but still hadn’t actually flown anywhere, so it was time.

When the plane finally took off, after driving around on the runway for what felt like an inordinate amount of time, I was so freaked that I couldn’t bring myself to look out the window for at least half an hour! It was such a tiny plane, smaller than a train car, and when it turned all you could see was the ground. But I was so excited to go to NYC it helped to cancel out how freaked I was. We were only in the air a little over an hour before we landed, I couldn’t believe how fast we got there!

dsc_0553

The next adventure was getting our subway pass at the airport, figuring out what bus to take to get to the subway, and then figuring how to navigate the subway to get to our hotel.

20161211_121039

After the long subway ride from Laguardia to Canal street in lower Manhattan, we climbed up the steps and found ourselves directly across from our hotel. Success! I hadn’t gotten us lost.  I was pretty proud of myself for successfully navigating the way there, by car, plane, bus, train and foot!

We didn’t have any major plans when we got there; just to wander around and explore.

dsc_0176

Our hotel was on the edge of Chinatown, which was a blast to explore.

dsc_0372

We walked on the High Line, which had some great city views.

dsc_0101

I got to see all the Christmas sights I had dreamed about, including the giant Christmas tree!

20161211_102319

I finally got to try an authentic NY bagel that I’m still dreaming about. Also, our hotel was conveniently located close to a pizza place that sold $1 cheese slices, which I forgot to take a picture of. We tried out a few pizza places during our stay, but the $1 place called Joey Pepperoni was the best.  I looked it up a few nights ago when I was craving a slice, and it’s only an 8.5 hour drive from the house 🙂 WORTH IT.

dsc_0308

We visited the World Trade Center and saw the memorial, plus this insane structure.

dsc_0235

We saw all kinds of crazy skyscrapers, including this giant cube which is the tallest residential building in the world, and full of billionaires.

dsc_0799

And we went to the top of 30 Rockefeller Center for a 360 degree view of the city.

I never expected NYC to be so much fun, and I am already dreaming of going back! My favorite part about the city is that you never know what your are going to see. Almost every time you turn a street corner you see something new, crazy or unexpected.

It’s a crazy city and I definitely recommend visiting it at least once in your life. I want to visit as many times as I can.

Weekly Journal #67

20170107_090756

Saturday morning breakfast. I love my Waffle House mug.

My latest project.

dsc_0707

SNOW!!!!  It snowed for the first time this winter, and it was a lot!

It’s time to get back in the habit of my Weekly Journal posts, and back into the habit of doing things in general. It feels like I was in some weird time warp these last few months and didn’t accomplish anything. I am looking forward to getting back to normal.

This week will have an interesting start because I have to go into work at 1:00 AM tonight in order to have one of our products finished on time. It will be an adventure because of all the snow on the road and also it is going to be about 5 degrees out, which is the coldest it’s been here since as long as I can remember. I’ve never been to work at such a strange hour before, and I am not a night person so hopefully it all goes okay. And if not.. Well I’ll blame whoever was in charge of making this horrendous schedule.

Have a good week!

Highlights of 2016

2016 was a pretty good year. Here is a look back on some of the highlights of my past year.

dsc_0463

Visiting Washington DC

We had visited  DC about five years ago and had always wanted to return, so this year we decided to get there by train. I had never traveled by train before and it was a lot of fun. This was also our first car-less vacation so it was an adventure to navigate the city through metro rides and buses.

dsc_9190

Sewing Machine

I had been wanting a sewing machine for a while, and when one showed up on sale at our favorite grocery store, Aldi, I threw it in the cart without thinking twice.

dsc_1591

Sewing a Dress

In the summer I started the overly ambitious project of sewing a dress for Halloween. I’d never sewed anything very complex before, and I ended up not even using a pattern because I couldn’t find one I liked. It ended up looking a bit ragged, but that was just fine for a creepy Halloween dress.

20160815_085702

New Job

Probably the best thing that happened this year was getting a job that was perfect for me. I work a a regenerative medicine center and grow organs and tissues for clinical trials. I like everything about it, and have the best boss, fun coworkers and a desk with a view of downtown!

dsc_1943

Pastel Hair

I added some lavender color to my hair in the spring, and ever since then I have had some sort of pastel color in my hair. Life’s too short to have normal hair!

Beluga Whale

A late night trip to Walmart involved us throwing this Beluga Whale in the cart, laughing at how funny he looked riding around, and then taking him home. The Beluga Whale is a great addition to the house.

3eb5e-20160702_114200

Volt

It was time for a new car so we decided on this 2013 electric Chevy Volt! Both our cars were close to 20 years old so driving this car has been so great.

8bb9b-2016-08-012b17-09-19

Paid Off

We were able to pay off our house this year! We bought it foreclosed at a very low price, so we threw any extra money we had towards paying it off. Now I can’t wait to start some remodeling projects.

dsc_4156

Beach Trip

We took our yearly trip to our favorite seaside town of Atlantic Beach. I love it there!

dsc_1994

Construction

There has been plenty of construction going on around the city. I love capturing the progress of it.

Plane Ride

I hadn’t ridden in a plane since I was four, so I decided it was time to go for a ride. Our plane was smaller than a train car and I was so freaked out that I couldn’t look at the window for the first 30 minutes. But I am ready to do it again because I love traveling!

dsc_0117-copy

New York City

The plane ride took us to NYC!  I had been dreaming of visiting NYC during Christmas time and I am so excited we finally got to do it. The city was so much fun and I want to go back.

2016 was an exciting year all around. The only negative thing in it for me was that disaster of an election, but I am trying to keep my mind off that for my own sanity. I hope 2017 brings more travel, lot of fun projects,  and exciting adventures.

And maybe a new camera because mine is in the process of dying 🙁

Happy New Year everyone!
